February 2019: Torn left knee anterior cruciate ligament, damaged meniscus and cartilage, after falling at the World Championships in Are. Finished the race but missed the remainder of the season. Returned home for surgery and rehabilitation. (delo.si, 8 Feb 2019)

Had two knee cruciate ligament surgeries performed by Dr. Marko Macura at the Trauma Clinic in Ljubljana. “The knee is, in my opinion, the best it can be. He reminds me every morning that something has happened to him in the past, or that he gets a little angry with a lot of effort. Otherwise, it serves me well, otherwise I would not have achieved such success.” (dnevnik.si, 15 Dec 2020)

Always loved speed, whether on two wheels, four wheels or skis. From Pecovnik, just above Celje, a step away from the ski resort at Celjska koca. (slovenskenovice.si, 15 Dec 2020)

Slovenian teammate Bostjan Kline, whom he often shared a room with. "You can really learn a lot from Bostjan, so I observe him and talk to him about his procedures. He is a skier who dedicates his day to skiing. He is constantly thinking about progress, how to upgrade his technique, fitness. His effort is repaid and with that he also showed me the way.” (siol.net, 28 Mar 2017)

:

“No matter how many weights you can lift, in the end, the head decides. If you don’t trust yourself enough, which I’ve always had problems with, you can’t achieve a top result. That is why I pay a lot of attention to psychological preparation, and lately I have been working with Tanja Kajtna." (dnevnik.si, 15 Dec 2020)

General Interest

THE NEAR END OF HIS CAREER
In 2014, he could not see a path forward without real results. "It was financially difficult. My parents invested everything in me. They also took on debt. I didn't pay it back on skis. Maybe also because of my teenage years, when sometimes I wasn't completely up to skiing with my head. But most of all, I felt I wasn't completely competitive." (slovenskenovice.si, 14 Dec 2020)

FATHERHOOD
Birth of his first child (daughter Lana) with tennis player and coach Barbara Volk, was in September 2020, and gave him special motivation to win his first World Cup. “Despite the difficult and challenges full of 2020, I can say this was the most beautiful year for me.” (slovenskenovice.si, 14 Dec 2020; Facebook, 1 Jan 2021)

FOOD FUN
Doesn't like chocolate, even though he received 40kg in a competition as a prize. Favourite dish is mashed potatoes, spinach and steak. (slovenskenovice.si, 14 Dec 2020)

Milestones

Finished 19th in downhill in his debut at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games (did not finish the giant slalom, super-G and combined).

World Championship debut in 2015 (Vail/Beaver Creek) with best finish of 13th in 2017 (combined) and 2019 (super-G).

Competed at four Junior World Championships (2010-13) with a top finish of 11th in the super-G in 2010 in Les Houches.

Won his first World Cup downhill in December 2020 (Val d'Isere). Starting 41st and two hours into the race, some television networks left live coverage before his winning run. Edging out Otmar Striedinger (AUT) by 0.22 seconds, it was his first podium finish (previous best sixth in super-G at Kvitfjell 2017). Third male Slovenian downhill winner since independence, after Andrej Jerman (2007, 2010) and Bostjan Kline (2017). "I still cannot believe it. I thought I was fast, I really had a good run, but I still couldn't believe it was enough for a victory." (total-slovenia-news.com, 13 Dec 2020)
