His parents introduced him to skiing before he was two at Hoch-Ybrig. Growing up in the flatlands of Zurich, he found himself challenged by skiers who lived in the mountains. At the age of 10, he moved to Austria to attend a ski academy in Schruns. At 14, he went to another academy in Stams, but soon returned to Switzerland. (tagblatt.ch, 13 Jan 2017; tagesanzeiger.ch, 13 Jan 2017)
His January 2017 victory in the Alpine combined at Wengen was the first World Cup victory by a Zurich area skier since Peter Mueller won his final downhill in 1988.
He was especially influenced in the sport by his father, who was a trainer with the regional ski association. (tagblatt.ch, 13 Jan 2017; tagesanzeiger.ch, 13 Jan 2017)
"For me, personally, skiing holds everything. I used to race cars, but skiing is a step beyond that. It removes the machinery and puts you one step closer to the elements. And it's a complete physical expression of freedom." Robert Redford (nielshintermann.ch)
