She was skiing while still in the womb. Her mother only stopped skiing at seven months pregnant because she couldn't find a jacket to go around her bump. For her parents, skiing was more than a hobby, it was a lifestyle, and they first put her on pink plastic skis at 18 months old, dragging her around the snow at Dingo Dell, Mt Buffalo. Growing up she skied one week a year at the Hotham, and during Easter at the French resort of Val d'sere.

When she was 10 years old she decided she wanted to be the world's number one Alpine skier so her parents sold their house to support her dream. In her first-ever race, competing in the Victorian Interschools, she was 16th, with no formal training. The following year she did a race camp for a month and won the Australian Interschools. "The rest just snowballed from there." (essentialkids.com.au; Athlete, 13 May 2021)

General Interest

PARENTS SUPPORT
Her mum wanted her to be a musician, not a skier but “she never loved it like she loved skiing.” In late 2005, the family made decisions that would enable her to live her ski dreams. Her dad worked overseas to fund everything while her mum micromanaged her career. Their lives changed with her parents telling her that she had to give it her all. “I feel pretty proud they are my parents. It's hard for me to imagine what it's been like for them. They gave up their friends and social time for me. It's been hard sometimes but it's also been a great gift. Coming from a nation where ski racing was not big, we knew we all had to give a hundred percent. I knew I would never achieve my dreams if I just dabbled in it." (essentialkids.com.au)
