Everything about the sport excites him - the big winter storms followed by perfect bluebird days, sharing moments in the mountains with friends, the speed, the adrenaline, the constantly changing and variable snow conditions, the travel, the way skiing is a generational sport. "I can go on an on, skiing is a rad sport." (Athlete, 16 Aug 2021)

He and girlfriend, ski racer Marie-Michele Gagnon (CAN), share the same trainer in the off-season, Nick Ward.

"It has been really fun to live and breathe this high-intensity lifestyle where we push each other training, but also eat the right food, rest properly, and really just do everything the right way. When I was younger, I worked hard but I was missing a few important pieces. Now having Marie-Michele to train with, our program in the off-season is dialed.

As for on-snow, I'm all about quality over quantity. Racing downhill and super-G, we only have one run that counts, so I try and train like that as well, focusing on one or maybe two runs instead of training as many runs in a session as possible. After training it's all about free skiing for me. Freeskiing is a huge part of my training regiment." (Athlete, 16 Aug 2021)

He looks less at individual persons and more at the culture of where he grew up in Olympic Valley, California. "It was the mountains and the people pushing their limits on a daily basis in Tahoe that motivated me to also see what my athletic potential was. It also taught me how to love skiing, and when you love doing something, that is motivation enough." (Athlete, 16 Aug 2021)

Milestones

Made his Olympic Winter Games debut at Sochi 2015, with a best finish of fifth in the downhill, missing the podium by 0.32 seconds.

2015 World Championships downhill silver medallist. In six appearances (2011-21), he has five top-20 finishes.

Tied for fourth in downhill with Matts Olsson (SWE) at the 2008 Junior World Championships, 0.13 seconds from the podium.

In over 165 World Cup starts, he has five podiums, and two victories in downhill (2014 Santa Caterina, 2017 Garmisch-Partenkirchen).

Put down a near-flawless run as the second skier out of the start house to earn his first super-G podium (third) on the Birds of Prey course at the Beaver Creek World Cup on 3 December 2021 - his first World Cup podium in four years, and in front of a large contingent of friends and family. “I didn’t make any mistakes, and I had a tactical plan. Today, I gave a little extra and came from behind and took my speed across the flat, and just hammered the finishing pitch. I won the long split, and that put me on the podium.” (aspentimes.com, 3 Dec 2021)
