Due to major injuries, his focus shifted from speed events to giant slalom, a discipline that suited his style during the comeback years.

22 January 2021: Suffered a broken neck (C7 transverse cervical fracture) after crashing in the World Cup downhill at Kitzbuehel, ending what had been a very strong 2020/21 season. In February 2021 he had surgery to fuse the C6 and C7 vertebrae. Returned to racing in October 2021 at the opening World Cup giant slalom in Soelden. (bostonglobe.com, 2 Mar 2021; buffalonews.com, 24 Oct 2021)

2014: During his comeback from the February 2013 injury, he reinjured his left knee while racing on the NorAm Cup. Underwent surgery to repair torn menisci as well as undergoing a femoral cartilage transplant. He was off snow for over 17 months and missed the entire 2014/15 season, coming back again in 2015/16 at NorAm Cup and Europa Cup races before returning to the World Cup in late February 2016.

11 February 2013: Crashed at the third gate in the downhill portion of the Alpine combined at World Championships in Schladming, causing extensive damage to his left knee including a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus. Multiple surgeries and rehabilitation kept him out of the sport's top level for over three years. Returned for the 2013/14 season, but only at the NorAm Cup level, reinjuring the knee. His mother, an Olympic slalom champion, taught him how to ski at age two at his family's small ski hill, Cochran's Ski Area, in Richmond, Vermont. "Growing up at Cochran's has been by far the biggest influencing factor to my development as a skier and my character as a human being. I am fortunate to be in a position now to pass those values and experiences on to future generations." (usskiandsnowboard.org)

Never felt pressured from his family. Loves the endorphin rush that comes with speed and the feeling he gets from pushing the limit. "What excited me about skiing was the challenge to get better everyday and find the fun in doing it." (skiracing.com, 3 Apr 2020; Athlete, 18 Aug 2021)

Cousin Robby Kelley (USA), a ski racer who is two years older. "We both grew up in Starksboro [Vermont] and he has always been incredibly athletic in whatever sport he takes part in. Being two years older he was also always the better skier and someone I was able to chase around the hill from the very beginning." (Athlete 18 Aug 2021)

Head coach Forest Carey. "Because of how hands-on he has been since I started establishing myself on the World Cup. He has so much expertise and knowledge involved with skiing, especially at the elite level having worked extensively with Bode (Miller) and Ted (Ligety). He has been a huge asset in giving me direction in my development in terms of technique and process and has such a great understanding in how to optimize each individual athlete's plan." General Interest

FAMILY LEGACY
The first generation of Cochran's produced four skiers to the USA Olympic ski team. Five cousins have skied for the USA Ski Team, making him the sixth Olympian and 11th national team member in the family.

“It’s definitely a source of pride for me. I’m trying to be my best self for my family. I’m a ski racer because I love it. I learned that from them, but it’s also something I’ve had to learn within myself.” (skiracing.com, 3 Apr 2020)

Mother Barbara Ann Cochran (Alpine skiing): 1972 Olympic slalom champion and Closing Ceremony flagbearer; 1970 World Championships slalom silver medallist; Olympic flagbearer at the Lake Placid 1980 Olympic Winter Games.

Grandfather Mickey Cochran (Alpine skiing): USA Alpine ski coach.

Aunt Lindy Cochran (Alpine skiing): Sixth in slalom at the Sarajevo 1976 Olympic Winter Games.

Aunt Marilyn Cochran (Alpine skiing): 20th in giant slalom and 28th in the downhill at the Tokyo 1972 Olympic Winter Games.

Uncle Bob Cochran (Alpine skiing): Eighth in downhill and 19th in giant slalom at the Sapporo 1972 Olympic Winter Games. First US male to win in Kitzbuehel’s Alpine combined (1973).

Uncle Chris Brown (Alpine skiing): Uncle was a 1973 All America selection while skiing for the University of Vermont. Married to Marilyn Cochran.

Cousin Jimmy Cochran (Alpine skiing): Two-time Olympian competing at Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010.

Cousins Robby Kelley, Tim Kelley, Jessica Kelley, Roger Brown (Alpine skiing): USA National team members competing at the World Cup level.

Cousin Roger Brown (Alpine skiing): 2002 collegiate slalom champion while skiing for Dartmouth University. Competed on World Cup circuit.

Cousin Douglas Brown (Alpine skiing): Skied for St. Lawrence University and in FIS level races.

“When I was little, looking at ski photos and videos from that era of my mom, Uncle Bob, Aunt Marilyn, and Aunt Lindy, I thought they were so old school. Meanwhile, my cousin Jess made the U.S. Ski Team when I was eight or nine years old, right when my cousin Robby and I were really getting into ski racing, so seeing her move up to that stage showed us where we could be someday. I might have just been too young, and the rest of my family too humble, to fully understand their legacy and achievements from when they were racing.” (skiracing.com, 13 Mar 2018)

COVID-19 BREAK
With his free time in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdowns, he started painting with watercolours finding it very therapeutic and relaxing. His designs, 'RCS ARCS', were incorporated into winter wear and face masks by a local Vermont company, with a percentage of the proceeds going toward supporting his pursuit of more World Cup podiums, travelling, and training camps. (skida.com, 8 Dec 2020)

BOARD MEMBER
Serves on the board of the non-profit Cochran's Ski Area, which was founded by his grandparents Mickey and Ginny Cochran in 1961. It continues to serve a role in Vermont to provide opportunities for children to engage in the sport. (Athlete, 18 Aug 2021, cochranskiarea.com)
