“When I was little, my goal was to be the best in the world. Not just to win an Olympic medal, because winning an Olympic medal doesn’t mean you are the best in the world. It just means you were the best on that day.” (Today Show, At Home with Natalie, 25 Jul 2019)

Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club coach Eric Colon: “One of the big takeaways I had from getting to experience working with her up close was just how professional she is and how hard she works. She’s got an incredible work ethic and it’s highly disciplined and highly focused. Every single run counts. She doesn’t ever take a run off. She is always working on specific targets. She never wastes a meter of vertical space.” (aspentimes.com, 27 Aug 2020)

Alpine skier Marlies Schild (AUT), four-time Olympic medallist (three silver, one bronze). “Marlies for me is always going to be the best. I wouldn’t be where I am without being able to watch her. If I can inspire any young athlete as much as she inspired me, then I did my job in this sport." (usskiandsnowboard.org, 29 Dec 2018)

FATHER’S PASSING
Father, Jeff, an anaesthesiologist and familiar figure on the World Cup circuit, passed away unexpectedly at age 65 from a head injury, on 2 February 2020 at the family home in Colorado. Shiffrin took a five-week break after his death. "He taught us so many valuable lessons but above everything else, he taught us the golden rule: be nice, think first. This is something I will carry with me forever. He was the firm foundation of our family and we miss him terribly."

Returned to the World Cup circuit in December. When she won her first race since her father’s passing, she remained subdued in victory, crouched in the snow and sobbed. “I definitely didn’t ski alone today. I had a lot of strength from a lot of people. It’s a bit bittersweet.” (cbc.ca, 3 Feb 2020, olympics.nbcsports.com, 3 Feb 2020; thestar.com, 14 Dec 2020)

Involved with “Kindness Wins,” an organisation that started in 2020 and acts as an umbrella for money raising initiatives for COVID-19 relief through signed hats, uniforms and other memorabilia. (denverpost.com, 12 May 2020)

FAMILY AFFAIR
Mother, Eileen, has been a long-time coach for Shiffrin, accompanying her throughout Europe during competition. Father, Jeff, a doctor and avid photographer, often travelled with her, taking photos at races, finding the right treatments and recovery timetables, and handing travel logistics.
