Her parents were recreational skiers who had met at Risoul, a French ski resort, about three hours from the family home in Marseilles on the Mediterranean. She learned to ski at a young age in Risoul, following her older brother who had joined a local club. She enjoyed skiing, golf, tennis, and judo, eventually focusing on skiing.
