May 2021: Left leg injury, fracturing a fibula, as the result of a motocross accident. He was introduced to skiing by his father Lars, a former ski racer. He got his first pair of skis when he was four, learning the sport at the Marikollen Skisenter near his home. By the age of eight, he wanted to become a professional ski racer. His father was his first coach. (henrikkristoffersen.com; oakley.com)

"I love skiing, that's the reason I do it. I just love the feeling I get when I do a turn. That feeling is one of the best feelings I can have in my life." (oakley.com)

:

His girlfriend, Tonje Barkenes, is a dietitian and provides him with support on his daily diet. “She does a lot of small tricks to pump up the calorie level of the food I eat. I need a lot of calories. I should eat over 4000 calories a day. It’s not easy. A couple calories here, a couple there, in the end, can mean 500 calories more. She’s really on point with that and she knows what to look for, which I don’t. She helps out a lot.” (olympics.com, 2 Jan 2021)

His first World Cup win, taking the Schladming World Cup night slalom in January 2014. “When 50,000 people come to see the race, the atmosphere and feeling around the event are special. It reminded me of how big a sport this is." (scandinaviantraveler.com, 17 Mar 2015)

Alpine skier Kjetil Andre Aamodt (NOR), eight-time Olympic medallist (four gold, two silver, two bronze), 12-time World Championships medallist (five gold, four silver, three bronze). (Norway Olympic Media Guide, 2014)

:

“The gap between winning and losing is so narrow. We talk about hundredths of a second, making the distance between heaven and hell very short. A poor finish is mentally tough, but there’s nothing I can do except try harder and train more." (scandinaviantraveler.com, 17 Mar 2015)

Milestones

Two-time Olympic Winter Games medallist, winning slalom bronze at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and giant slalom silver at PyeongChang 2018. In winning the Sochi 2014 bronze at the age of 19 years - 235 days, he became the youngest male Alpine medallist of all time.

Competed in five consecutive World Championships (2013-21), winning giant slalom gold in 2019 (Are), and slalom bronze in 2021 (Cortina d'Ampezzo).

In four Junior World Championships (2012-15), he won eight medals including six gold - the most of any skier in history.

Swept giant slalom titles at 2019 Trofeo Toppolino, recognised as one of the top children's races in the world.

In almost 180 World Cup starts, he has over 65 podiums and 24 victories (19 slalom, five giant slalom). The most recent victory was on 19 December 2021 in giant slalom (Alta Badia), his first World Cup giant slalom win in two years with a new equipment setup. His 24th World Cup victory moved him ahead of teammate Kjetil Jansrud and former Swiss standout Michael von Gruenigen into a tie for 16th on the all-time list with Italian great Gustav Thoeni.
