Grew up amidst some of the world's biggest mountains in the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan, teaching himself to ski at the age of four on wooden skis made by his uncle. His four older brothers were also national-level skiers. He learned to ski in the Naltar ski school at a resort in northern Pakistan run by the Pakistan Air Force.
