Grew up in the Piedmont region of Italy, south of Torino. Her father, Maurizio, was a ski instructor and coach, so at age two, she began playing on snow with plastic skis around her house where her father would build a snow jump. Eventually, she was skiing on the slopes in the Cuneo region including Entracque, Lurisia, and Limone Piemonte. Her skiing career began at Lurisia then moved to the club at Val Vermenagna, eventually joining Centro Sportivo Esercito, a sports program of the Italian army. Father Maurizio Bassino: "I was the first to put her on skis but only to play. My wife and I have always been passionate about the mountains and skiing. Our children, since childhood, we used to take them around, on bikes and skis. Sport is important." (torino.republicca.it, 18 Jan 2021)

Improve herself every day and be ready for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. "I think the best way to be ready at the Olympics is to perform well during the World Cup season. You can't say, 'I just focus on this event,' and neglect the other races. At the end of the day, it's the World Cup races that get you ready for the Olympics." Summer training is always very varied, both in terms of disciplines practiced and in terms of intensity, working a lot on endurance, aerobic capacity, elasticity, balance, and proprioception. "I think it's a mix of factors. You need to be fit and physically prepared. I worked a lot over the summer to be able to cope with the demands of an intense season. You need to have a solid technique and a strong mind because it's your mind which controls everything. If your mind knows what to do, then your body will follow." (olympics.com, 27 Dec 2020)

After winning her third World Cup giant slalom of the 2020/21 season, each in a different place and type of snow condition, she commented: "I have won on three different types of races, on three different types of snow, and I am proud of that. I saw Marcel Hirscher, Anna Veith, they were able to win on several types of slopes, I also managed to do it and it is incredible." (barrons.com, 16 Jan 2021)

General Interest

TRANSITION
One of the most complete skiers on the women's World Cup circuit. "Everything starts from the giant slalom for me. If I can do well there, if I ski 'balanced', then I can do well also in the other disciplines. In slalom and speed, it doesn't come that natural like in giant slalom, but with a lot of work, training, and small adjustments I know I can be competitive there too. This is how I developed last season, you just need to adapt your style to other disciplines." (olympics.com, 27 Dec 2020)

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES VS WORLD CUP
Had a great experience in her first Olympic Winter Games at PyeongChang 2018. "It was simply magic. My first Olympic experience was better than any of my expectations. It was just unique and each moment and emotion will remain with me forever in my thoughts and heart. It's impossible to compare the World Cup Circuit to the Olympics. Nothing is the same, only the athletes but not their spirit and atmospheres." (skysports.com, 7 Mar 2018)

TRAINING PARTNERS
Has been training with Italy's elite team, including PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games downhill gold medallist Sofia Goggia, and Federica Brignone, giant slalom Olympic bronze medallist and last season's overall World Cup winner. "It's always been an honour to be able to train with them and be part of their team. They are two very strong athletes, very determined and hardworking. I admire them because they always try to improve, to raise the bar and that’s what makes you a better skier. When someone is going faster one day in training, then you try to understand what she does so you can improve yourself. So it’s a process that helps the whole team to grow and if things are done in the right way, everyone can benefit from it." (olympics.com, 27 Dec 2020)

FAMILY
Her parents Maurizio and Elena run an insurance agency. Older brother, Matteo is a sheep farmer, and younger brother Marco manages a mountain hut in Maritime Alps Natural Park. (Athlete, 22 Sep 2021; targatocn.it, 26 Nov 2019; riefugiaquesta.it)

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Made her Olympic debut at PyeongChang 2018, finishing fifth in the giant slalom. "I know only medals count in an Olympics, but finishing fifth in my first Games was a great achievement and I was really proud of myself. I didn't have any scary moments - only magic ones." (skysports.com, 7 Mar 2018)

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competed in four World Championships from 2015-21, winning gold at home in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2021 in the debut of parallel giant slalom. She was originally declared the winner against Austria's Katharina Liensberger in the gold medal final on count-back (fastest single run) with both athletes dead-heating, but Liensberger was later upgraded to joint-gold with a tie declared. There was a similar result in her semi-final when she dead-heated with eventual bronze medallist Tessa Worley of France, but she was advanced on count-back. It was her first world title and is added to a world bronze medal in the team event in 2019.

Giant slalom gold medallist at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Jasna.

WORLD CUP
In the 2019/20 season cut short by the pandemic, she reached the podium six times in three months in five disciplines, including her first win, in the giant slalom in Killington, USA, in November 2019, to become the first Italian woman to achieve top-three finishes in five different disciplines.

All five of her World Cup victories are in giant slalom (1 x 2019, 2 x 2020, 2 x 2021).

Won the 2020/21 World Cup giant slalom title with five victories.
