March 2021: An unspecified injury caused her to pull out of the snowboard World Championships in Rogla. "I was getting ready for the races and looking forward, but I can't even complete my stretching, let alone carry the snowboard over my head single-handed." (barrons.com, 1 Mar 2021)

January 2021: Cut her lip as a result of a crash in a World Cup downhill in Crans Montana. She raced again the next day.

:

Started skiing at four, and at five decided to pick up snowboarding following her older brother. (FIS Snowboard YouTube, 13 Dec 2020)

“I started with skis when I was two or three years old. I was following what my brother did. He is one and a half years older than me and so when he started with a board, I wanted to do it too. I was five years old when I started with snowboarding and I did freestyle snowboarding and boardercross until I was about 13 years old. And again it was my brother who started with Alpine snowboarding and I wanted to beat him, so I learned that too. To be honest my first steps on a snowboard and also then later on an Alpine board were really difficult for me and I didn’t like it in the beginning. But as I said I was very competitive and I wanted to get better at these sports. I believed that once I got into it I would love it – and I was right.” (iceatrail.com, 27 Jul 2019)

:

She loves snowboarding and Alpine skiing equally, and can't decide between the two. (FIS Snowboard YouTube, 13 Dec 2020)

:

To better prepare for icy slopes, she plans to train on ice with Czech hockey and National Hockey League player Jaromir Jagr. (AFP, 27 Mar 2021)

Her brother, Jonas, who designed her superhero-style identity on her racing suit and snowboard art. "We developed this kind of secret identity. He made a suit for me as well as my helmet and everything. When I’m standing at the start I feel like a superhero, it’s really helping. It’s cool to have someone who is so close to me and he’s creating such great stuff which I can use in my real job in life and it’s really special." (FIS Snowboard YouTube, 13 Dec 2020)

:

"There are still a lot of goals in front of me and I still feel that, after all these years, I have the flame burning inside of me. I’m still enjoying my life the way it is, even through all this hard work the life of the professional athlete brings.” (iceatrail.com, 24 Jul 2019)

General Interest

TWO DISCIPLINES
"I am doing both because I feel In my heart that I’m still snowboarder and skier, not only one. For sure it’s challenging because I raced yesterday, today we travel, tomorrow I will ski again, so I have to switch myself quite quick but I mean this is how I like it, this is exactly the rush I love and this is why I do it." (FIS Snowboard YouTube, 13 Dec 2020, the day after she raced in PGS in Cortina and had to take a helicopter to compete in Val D'Isere Alpine Skiing races).

SPORTING TALENT
"Actually I don’t feel I’m very talented for sports, I know it’s weird to say but if you see me do any sports for the first time, I’m super bad like I have no movement memory, I’m very bad in any sports. But my motivation is at something when I’m not good and this motivates me the most, so that’s why I learned how to windsurf, how to skate, how to do something. My coaches when they see me doing like some sports, like football which I’m terrible at, or some other sports for the first time they don’t believe that I can ski so good and snowboard so good and I look totally calm but you know it’s just power that push me forward. I just want to learn and being better that’s what happened with ski, what happened with snowboard, that’s why I’m here." (FIS Snowboard YouTube, 13 Dec 2020)

FAMOUS FATHER
Her father, Janek Ledecky, is a famous Czech pop singer and world-renowned composer (musical Hamlet - The Rock Opera). He had several concerts cancelled during COVID-19, but took the time to write a book of children's poems, Verse Potrhle, to be read together with parents. Her brother, Jonas, did the illustrations. (blesk.cz, 24 Jun 2021)

RELATED TO KATIE LEDECKY (USA)?
After winning gold at PyeongChang 2018, she and Olympic champion swimmer Katie Ledecky (USA) exchanged social media posts hypothesising that they might be related. Ester's grandfather did some research and determined that they may have shared some common ancestors. (Facebook, 23 Jul 2021; washingtonpost.com, 17 Feb 2018)

COLORADO CONNECTION
Spent five years leading up to her historic Olympic medals in snowboarding and Alpine skiing in 2018 training with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club in Colorado, first with snowboard coach Theo Remmelink and then with Justin Reiter. Reiter, a 2010 Olympian for the USA in Alpine snowboarding, continues to coach her for snowboarding and was at the finish cheering her on for her Alpine skiing super-G gold medal at PyeongChang 2018. Milestones

First athlete to win gold in two different disciplines at the same Olympic Winter Games. At the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games she won gold in both Alpine skiing (super-G) and snowboarding (Parallel giant slalom).

Coming into the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, her best Alpine World Cup finish was a 13th in downhill in December 2017 (Lake Louise). She had only three top-10 finishes in Europa Cup races before winning gold at PyeongChang 2018. Since 2018, she has become a regular on the Alpine World Cup, with six top-three finishes including two wins.

In three Alpine World Championships (2017-21), her best finishes were fourth in downhill and super-G in 2021 (Cortina d'Ampezzo).

Finished second in the 2020 World Cup downhill rankings.

Only athlete to win four consecutive snowboard parallel Crystal Globes (2016-2019), seven in total (three in parallel giant slalom).
