Grew up in Hochfilzen, Austria and started skiing at three. In elementary school, he began training with the local ski club and soon made it to district and regional teams in the Tyrolean Ski Association. Joined the Austrian junior team in 2003, and in 2007 was named to the Austrian national team. (romed-baumann.com)

After being released from the Austrian team, he began competing for Germany in 2019, winning a silver medal in super-G at the 2021 World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo - the first German medal in the world championships super-G since 1987. Milestones

Made his Olympic Winter Games debut at Vancouver 2010 here he had his best finish of fifth in the giant slalom (14th in combined at Sochi 2014).

Competed in seven World Championships for his native Austria, and one for Germany (2021), winning two individual career medals, including bronze in super combined in 2013, and silver in super-G in 2021 (with a time 0.07 seconds behind the winner, and 20th on the start list). He is the first skier of the modern era to win world championship medals with two different countries. (reuters.com, 11 Feb 2021)

Competed in three Junior World Championships (2004-06). At age 18, he won downhill gold in his first start in 2004 at Maribor. Two years later, he won silver in downhill and slalom (2006).

First World Cup podium finish was second in the super-combined in 2006 in Reiteralm, with his first victory coming in the same event in Sestriere in 2009.
