3 November 2021: Tore the front syndesmosis ligament in his left ankle while training in Austria. Doctors anticipated a six week recovery to be back on snow. (skiracing.com, 3 Nov 2021)

February 2019: Torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee when he crashed in the combined super-G at the Bansko World Cup. Was back on snow in six months and was competing nine months later at the Levi World Cup slalom. (atomic.com, 11 Jan 2011)

Started skiing with his parents at age three, and joined Ski Club Bad Kleinkirchheim at seven. Since then he has been under the guidance of his trainer and mentor Alfred Hopfgartner. (marcoschwarz.com)

He has had a dream of winning a World Cup Crystal Globe since he was a child. "It is clearly the greatest success of my athletic life so far. A childhood dream has come true. When he works out at home he keeps some of his trophies in sight as a motivator. "Of course I keep the trophies and medals. Only the crystal ball for the slalom World Cup is really visible in the living room. To be world champion is awesome. But this ball - that's THE trophy for me. Followed Austrian teammate Vincent Kriechmayr's golds in downhill and super-G to win the Alpine combined title at the 2021 World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo. It was the first time Austria has won the first three events at a world championships. (fis-ski.com)

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Competed at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, winning silver in the team parallel with Austria and finishing fourth in Alpine combined, 0.33 seconds behind bronze medallist Victor Muffat-Jeandet (FRA).

At the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in his home country, he won three gold medals (Alpine combined, giant slalom, mixed team parallel).

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Five-time World Championships medallist, winning one gold (2021 Alpine combined), one silver (2019 team parallel), three bronzes (2019 Alpine combined and slalom, 2021 giant slalom). In winning the 2021 World combined title, he stunned French favourite Alexis Pinturault to win gold by 0.04 seconds.

Like senior Worlds, he has a medal of every colour from two Junior World Championships, winning 2014 super-G gold, 2015 slalom silver, 2014 downhill bronze.

WORLD CUP
Made his World Cup debut in November 2014 at age 19. Achieved his first podium in December 2015 (third in slalom at Madonna di Campiglio, behind winner Henrik Kristoffersen and runner-up Marcel Hirscher). In January 2021, he became the first Austrian man other than Hirscher in nearly four years to win a World Cup slalom (Schladming).
