Grew up in France and learned to ski at the age of two with his French father. His mother, from Timor-Leste, escaped then East Timor before the country was embroiled in a mid-70s war and sought refuge in Australia. "I often say that my mom gave me the heritage, the spirit and the blood and my dad gave me this very French thing, that in winter we go skiing." (theworld.org, Feb 2014; reuters.com, 11 Feb 2018; Athlete, 9 Jan 2022)
While he learned to ski in France, it was a connection with a lifelong friend in Australia that got him into ski racing with an eye on representing his mother's homeland of Timor-Leste at the Olympic Winter Games. During trips from France to visit relatives in Australia and Timor-Leste, he began race training at Mount Buller in Australia. (theguardian, 20 Feb 2014)
Fell in love with the sport as a child, especially the adrenaline and the freedom. (Athlete, 9 Jan 2022)
Continues to use his voice as an advocate for sport in Timor-Leste. He takes pride in representing Timor-Leste, even though skiing is quite foreign to the country. "They tell me that they don't really understand what I'm doing but as long as I'm bringing the flag to the world, they will always be here. They gave me a title in Timor: Ambassador of the youth in sport in Timor. I think every athlete at the Winter Olympics is one and yeah, I really believe that this was one of my main jobs here, to show to the world this little country that nobody knows and nobody can put on a map. Yes, I really believe that I'm a skier and as well, maybe, an ambassador for Timor." (theworld.org, Feb 2014; Athlete, 9 Jan 2022)
His first Olympic start at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and his first World Cup start in the Kitzbuehel slalom in 2018. (Athlete, 9 Jan 2022)

Flagbearer for Timor-Leste at both the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. "The Opening Ceremony was really big for me, just catching that moment for it to stay all my life in my head. Of course the joy of being with other athletes that had the same dream as me." (theworld.org, Feb 2014; olympedia.org)
